Some Changes to John’s Joint

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

All 45 previous posts have now had tags added to them and have the new-style “pretty” permalink. These are a couple of the changes that will make John’s Joint friendlier to both humans and search engines.

If you click on a link in the “Tags” cloud, it will open a page with all of the articles that have that tag assigned. If you have any suggestions for different tags that might be better than those I chose, please leave a comment and let me know. It takes only a few minutes to add, delete, or change any of the tags on a post. While any number of tags can be assigned to a post, most experts say that four to six is ideal for SEO (search engine optimization). Some of the articles have as many as 10 tags, because it was almost impossible to decide which ones to leave off and my number one priority is ease-of-use for human readers, not search engines. My goal is to make John’s Joint easy to navigate so that when John, I, or any guest authors post profound, witty, informative pieces of journalism, dumb pieces of digital drivel, you can easily find what you want to enlighten yourself with ridicule.

The default permalink is like this: http://geofam.org/?p=100 (this links to John’s “Apologies” article.) The new permalink to that same post is http://geofam.org/politics/apologies/. Both links should work for any of the articles posted, past or future. For some reason, most of the “category” links do not work. I don’t know if some of the changes I made broke them, or if they didn’t work before. I discovered the broken links about halfway through adding tags/changing permalinks. Most likely, something I did broke them. So I will see if they can be fixed…

Also, some of the changes I want to make now will require a different theme. Since its inception in May 2007, John’s Joint has used the default theme. When the Wordpress scripts were upgraded from 2.7.1 to 2.8.4 yesterday, I also installed an additional 15 themes. I will be experimenting with different themes for the next umpteen days until finding one I like. I am not, of course, limited to the 17 themes now installed (default, classic, and the 15 others installed yesterday) but those are a good starting point. There are 951 themes on the Wordpress website. (Opens in new window.)

Come back often, and if you happen to catch the blog when I am trying out a different theme, leave a comment and let me know what you think of it. I will probably post a short article each time a different theme is tried out.

And for starters, the theme presently being tested is “Djupvik.” It has three columns, and, with the default settings, displays only the first few lines of an article with a link to the whole enchilada. If that can not be changed, I will try another theme. I already tried and decided against several in rapid succession.

Stay tuned!
